Biogas in Denmark: 40 years of development and a new market phase
Market and policy
In Denmark, biogas has replaced 40% of the natural gas injected into the grid, and today 40% of livestock manure is valorized in biogas plants. After forty years of technological and market development, the country is now focusing on a “market pull,” creating conditions that encourage the consumption of biomethane rather than relying solely on production subsidies. As Bruno Sander, COO of Biogas Danmark, explains, the Danish experience highlights the importance of an integrated regulatory framework involving politics, agriculture, and local communities. The next step will be to reduce Europe’s dependence on imported gas and promote decarbonization through a more mature, subsidy-independent market.
