Biomethane/RNG for the enhancement of organic waste: the Spanish example
Naturgy, a Spanish utility company operating in the energy sector, has 3 RNG plants: Elena in Cataluña, which produces biomethane/RNG from landfill waste, Bens in La Coruña which produces biomethane/RNG from WWT (wastewater treatment) and the last one in Lleida, which produces biomethane/RNG from zootechnical wastewater. The latter will be deployed in 2023 and has already been tested to produce biomethane/RNG to power the city’s buses. As Marta Peiró comments, the exploitation of organic waste and livestock waste is fundamental in a country such as Spain that has adopted stricter laws on waste management, and anaerobic digestion and biomethane/RNG production are the technologies that meet these needs. Biomethane/RNG is increasingly becoming the solution to the country’s energy independence problem and interest in this new resource is growing.
