Two years after the launch of Ireland’s National Biomethane Strategy, the direction is clear: biomethane is no longer just a plan on paper, it’s a piece of the country’s energy puzzle.

The original target still stands strong: up to 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030, covering around 10% of national gas demand. In the meantime, the policy framework has started to take shape. The Renewable Heat Obligation (RHO) scheme has been introduced to stimulate demand, grid injection standards are being refined, and the first projects are moving from feasibility studies to concrete development phases.

Momentum is building - but so are the questions. Financing, feedstock availability, planning permits, community engagement: the road to 140–200 AD plants is ambitious and requires alignment across agriculture, energy and policy.
