RENMAD Renewable Gases 2025
Italy is standing at the forefront of a renewable gas transformation, with biomethane and green hydrogen set to drive the country’s energy transition forward.
RENMAD Renewable Gases 2025 marks the launch of a premier industry event that unites these two key sectors under one roof—offering a dedicated space for collaboration, innovation, and investment.
Hydrogen: driving the decarbonization agenda
Green hydrogen is becoming a central pillar in Italy’s decarbonization goals. The National Hydrogen Strategy lays out ambitious targets—2% hydrogen integration and 5 GW of electrolysis by 2030, increasing to 20% hydrogen penetration by 2050.
The government's focus extends to deploying hydrogen in sectors where electrification is challenging, such as heavy transport, energy-intensive industries, and non-electrified rail. Projects like the South H2 Corridor, which will link North African hydrogen supplies to Austria and Germany, are key to meeting Europe's demand—potentially supplying 40% of its imports.
With backing from the EU’s Hydrogen and Gas Decarbonisation Package and Italy’s Recovery and Resilience Plan, initiatives such as hydrogen valleys demonstrate the country’s drive to become a European leader in renewable gases.
Biomethane: A Rapidly Expanding Sector
Biomethane—purified biogas with the same quality as natural gas—is transforming the Italian energy system. Production is expected to reach 4 bcm by 2026, up from 2.3 bcm in 2021, which already made up 3.3% of national gas use.
A €4.5 billion state-backed incentive program, combined with infrastructure like over 1,000 CNG refueling stations, positions Italy to leverage biomethane across transport and industry. Its integration with agriculture, the food industry, and sustainable digestate applications enhances energy independence while promoting circular economy models.
