Biomethane could grow in the UK, but more stable policies are needed
Market and policy
A study by Aider BioInsights, a consultancy specialized in renewable energy, for the Green Gas Task Force, a group coordinating government and industry on biomethane, highlights strong growth potential for biomethane in the UK. Capacity could rise from the current 7 TWh to 50 TWh by 2030 and up to 120 TWh by 2050, using only sustainable feedstocks without competing with food production. The main obstacle remains the lack of stable, long-term policies, which slows down investment. Longer and more flexible support schemes are needed to allow projects of different scales to develop. Furthermore, biomethane should be seen not only as an energy source but also as a tool to decarbonize agriculture and improve soil, water, and air quality.
