Biomethane in Greece: Challenges and Early Steps
Market and policy
According to Odysseas Rigopoulos, Med & East Europe Director at Heygaz, the biomethane sector in Greece faces challenges common across Europe, such as feedstock availability and digestate disposal, but with higher costs for local producers. The real bottleneck is the regulatory framework: there is a lack of clarity on incentives for producers and consumers, preventing significant new investments. Heygaz already operates five plants and aims to convert them to biomethane, targeting 350 GWh per year from agricultural waste by 2030, covering about 17% of the national target. Despite the difficulties, the company positions itself as a sector pioneer, showing that with political will and concrete projects, biomethane can take off.
