Biomethane purchase agreements in Italy: new market opportunities
Market and policy
In this video interview, Simona D’Angelosante, Head of Energy Markets at CIB – Italian Biogas Consortium, explains how the Agriculture Decree promotes the signing of purchase agreements between biomethane producers and hard-to-abate industries.
BPAs (Biomethane Purchase Agreements) connect producers directly with users, allowing biomethane sales even with intermediary support. This enables the direct transfer of Guarantees of Origin to the end customer, helping meet ETS obligations and reduce CO₂ quota costs. Verdemetano, a cooperative established in 2021 by CIB and CGBI – the Italian Sugar Beet Growers Confederation, supports negotiations by aggregating biomethane producers and facilitating agreement signing.
