Energy and Resilience: The Role of Cogeneration for the Northwell Health System
Northwell Health, the largest healthcare provider in New York State, aims to balance sustainability goals with the need to ensure uninterrupted operations, even during power grid disruptions. In this context, cogeneration (CHP) provides a reliable and resilient energy source while also reducing emissions. Although local climate policies initially penalized CHP plants, viewing them as unfavorable in terms of emissions, extensive collaboration between government agencies, engineers, and industry experts led to a revision of the regulations. Today, as Michael Gentile, Project Manager at Northwell Health, explains, cogeneration is recognized as a valuable contributor to both emission reductions and the energy security of healthcare facilities.
