From biochar to biogas: CIEMAT’s research
Market and policy
CIEMAT (Centro de Investigaciones Energéticas, Medioambientales y Tecnológicas) is a Spanish public research center working on renewable energies, positioned between universities and industry to turn research into practical solutions. Among its activities is the study of new materials to improve biogas quality. In this interview, José María Sánchez talks about a recent research project on biochar, produced through the pyrolysis of biomass and waste. The biochar is then transformed into a bio-adsorbent, a material capable of capturing CO₂ and removing hydrogen sulfide from biogas. Its performance is comparable to commercial products, with a key advantage: it is renewable and derived from waste. Learn more in this video.
