Greece: Exploring the New Biomethane Law with Grant Thornton Greece
Market and policy
Greece’s first biomethane law, published in 2025, aims to lay the groundwork for the development of the local market. It provides flexibility for existing plants, which can partially switch to biomethane while co‑producing electricity. The regulation clarifies the procedures for environmental and operational permits and introduces incentives, such as coverage of connection costs to the natural gas grid. There is also the possibility of a financial support scheme for investors, both for existing and greenfield plants, although it is currently non‑binding. The goal is to boost biomethane production and evaluate all investment options. We explore the details with Despina Tzoulaki, Director at Grant Thornton Greece.
