Biogas and biomethane in PepsiCo’s decarbonization strategy
Industry and WWT
PepsiCo, a global giant in the food and beverage sector, aims to reduce its emissions by 50% by 2030 compared to 2022 levels, with electrification as the preferred option, although not always feasible. In this context, biogas and biomethane are becoming key elements of the company’s energy strategy. In several plants, such as the one in Melissa, Texas, producing Lay’s chips, upgrading the anaerobic digestion facilities allows the production of biomethane and reduces site emissions by around 15%. PepsiCo has similar solutions in Belgium and Portugal and has launched its first landfill biomethane project in Brazil, marking an important step beyond Europe.
