Biogas in Germany: need for more incentives and new tenders in 2025
Market and policy
On October 1, 2024, in Germany, the Federal Network Agency (Bundesnetzagentur) announced the results of the 233.7 MW tender for biogas plants. The high number of registrations for the tender highlights the need to increase the volume of future allocations to prevent plant closures at the end of incentives and ensure the continuity of renewable energy production. New tenders are planned for 2025, requiring greater flexibility from plants to produce energy during peak demand periods when wind and solar power cannot fully meet total demand. Alexander Lehr, from renergie Allgäu e.V., reports that the German government is working on a new draft law that could benefit the sector.
