Biomethane and the free market in Brazil: the challenge of efficiency and credibility
Market and policy
Adrianno Lorenzon, Natural Gas Director at Abrace (Brazil), highlights the importance of a liberalised gas market also for biomethane, which should directly connect producers and industries. Certificates of origin must be credible, traceable, and useful for companies aiming to decarbonise - otherwise, they risk becoming just another carbon tax. To avoid higher gas prices, Lorenzon calls for greater efficiency in transport and distribution networks, currently too costly compared to other countries. Only then can biomethane and natural gas compete sustainably in the Brazilian market.
