Biomethane potential in Europe and Greece
Market and policy
In the last 15 years, European biomethane production has grown rapidly, quadrupling to reach 55 TWh per year, with an annual growth rate of 16–20%. The long-term European potential could cover up to 40% of current natural gas demand, and even the entire future demand in scenarios of strong electrification. Greece, with its developed agricultural sector, could quickly grow its biomethane industry through incentive schemes, dedicated markets, mapping of feedstocks, and “virtual pipelines” for transport. These strategies would support both energy security and emission reduction.
