Biomethane certification in Spain: between growth and new challenges
Market and policy
In Spain, biomethane certification is still under development: it is necessary to integrate guarantees of origin with the sustainability verification required by the RED III. According to Sergio García, Development Director at Enagás, certified production could triple by 2026 and reach 25 TWh if all projects are completed, exceeding the PNIEC targets. It is also essential to correctly certify by-products through the European Union Database to ensure traceability.
What is needed to grow the market? Investments, regulatory simplification, and communication: the public must be convinced that biomethane is truly a clean and ready-to-use energy source.
