Biomethane in Spain: local energy for a sustainable future
Market and policy
Biomethane is a renewable gas that plays a key role in decarbonising Spain’s energy and agricultural systems. Beyond its environmental benefits, it supports the circular economy, waste management, and job creation in rural areas. Spain has great potential—the third largest in Europe—but still a limited number of plants compared to countries like France or Italy. Growth is mainly driven by private investment, while public support remains modest. However, regional governments are starting to implement their own strategies and incentives. How can the sector take off faster? We asked Naiara Ortiz de Mendíbil, Secretary General of Sedigas.
