Brazil: 116 cogeneration plants installed for a total of 1336 Mw
Market and policy
Cogeneration has become part of Brazil's energy mix. Although 70% of energy is generated by hydropower, the potential of installing cogeneration plants amounts to 3500 Mw, 800 Mw of which used in the commercial sector and the remaining 2700 Mw in the industry sector. Cogeneration technology has also proved successful in times of drought and during blackouts, which Brazil has suffered from in recent years.
