Can Mata: Spain’s first large-scale biomethane plant from landfill waste
Applications and technologies
The Can Mata plant, inaugurated in 2023 in Barcelona, is the first large-scale facility in Spain to produce biomethane from controlled landfill waste. The plant converts around 4,750 m³ of biogas per hour into 2,000 m³ of biomethane, injecting over 70 GWh of energy into the national grid each year. Historically, most of the biogas was used for electricity and heat production, while since 2023 it has been upgraded to biomethane. Can Mata also features Spain’s first “reverse flow” system for biomethane, necessary to manage production exceeding grid demand. Projects like this not only valorize local energy production but also significantly reduce dependence on external sources.
