Circular economy and biomethane: The new resilience of European agriculture
Market and policy
The circular economy is not new to European agriculture. Yet, its untapped potential remains enormous: it is estimated that around 80 million tonnes of agricultural residues could be valorised across Europe, including for the production of biogas and biomethane. By combining circularity with sustainable farming, it is possible not only to secure sufficient resources but also to build a carbon-neutral economy. For many farms, biogas and biomethane represent a concrete opportunity to become carbon neutral, supporting the transition of agricultural practices towards more resilient models.
