Flexibility in biogas plants: A German example
Biogas cogeneration
What is needed to make a biogas plant flexible? The answer comes from the University of Hohenheim: it is necessary to overdimension the production capacity and install adequate gas storage systems to cover peak demand. The flexibility of the plant allows it to integrate energy production with local needs. A good example is the Auenhof Bioenergie plant in Germany, which produces 990 kW of electricity and supplies thermal energy to 30 buildings, saving 100,000 liters of heating oil annually. The plant has optimized electricity production during the colder months, covering the heating demand as well, thus creating a system that benefits both operators and users.
