Germany: the role of biomethane in the GHG quota mechanism
Sustainable mobility
In Germany, companies selling fuels for road transport are also required to reduce their CO₂ emissions. To achieve this, they must meet a specific greenhouse gas (GHG) reduction quota, which can be fulfilled in two ways: by using low-impact fuels such as biodiesel, bioethanol, or biomethane; or by purchasing GHG quotas from third parties, i.e., entities that generate a certified reduction in emissions. This mechanism represents an alternative source of income for biomethane producers, as the market placement or supply of biomethane generates tradeable GHG quotas. These quotas can be sold directly to companies obliged to offset their emissions.
