Hamburg: from World War II anti-aircraft bunker to “Energy Bunker” to fight climate change
Market and policy
In 2013, in the Wilhelmsburg area of Hamburg, a former anti-aircraft bunker was converted into an “Energy Bunker”. The building was rebuilt and fitted out with a biogas plant, a solar thermal plant and a natural gas cogeneration plant. Both of the cogeneration engines are powered by biomethane. In this way the bunker supplies completely renewable and sustainable electricity to neighbouring buildings.
