In Humacao, Puerto Rico, the Caribbean’s first RNG plant sparks new momentum for CHP
Renewable gases
The first renewable natural gas (RNG) facility in the Caribbean has been inaugurated in Humacao, Puerto Rico. Capable of producing 450,000 MMBtu annually from locally sourced waste for the next 50 years, the project offers a sustainable alternative to LNG, which currently powers 90% of the island’s combined heat and power (CHP) units. However, RNG remains more expensive than LNG, and existing tax incentives—such as the 25% credit—are non-transferable and often unusable by potential buyers. A regulatory change allowing the sale or transfer of these tax credits could enhance RNG’s competitiveness and support its broader adoption across the island.
