Innovative treatments and optimization of energy resources: the challenge of the Grünenthal pharmaceutical company
Case history
Grünenthal, a pharmaceutical company focused on the production of innovative treatments for pain management, has been striving to optimize resources and energy consumption since its early days. Within this framework, a 637 kW cogeneration plant has been installed at the Origgio industrial center in Italy, which has allowed Grünenthal to use the steam produced by the cogenerator in the production stages and the hot water for air conditioning, even during the summer. The investment made it possible to cover 50% of the company’s energy needs and the ROI is less than 3 years. This strategic decisions goes hand in hand with the environmental policies of the company, which has obtained an important international recognition ranking it among the top 5 companies in the pharmaceutical sector in terms of environmental protection.
