Power to Methane Technology: Benefits When Integrated with Biogas Plants
Power to Methane technology is a renewable, low-carbon gas production process that uses two main components: water electrolysis to generate hydrogen and the combination of this hydrogen with CO2 to produce methane. The required electricity is preferably renewable, and the CO2 is biogenic. Integrating this technology into the anaerobic digestion process allows the produced CO2 to be purified and reused to increase synthetic methane production, thereby reducing atmospheric CO2 emissions. Power to Methane technology contributes to energy transition goals by replacing fossil fuels with renewable methane and providing a flexible solution for managing excess electricity produced from renewable sources like solar and wind.
