Solvay focuses on renewable gases: the role of biomethane in the chemical industry
Applications and technologies
Solvay, a global chemical group with production sites worldwide, already uses biomethane in Italy at one of its main silica production plants, where it is used to generate thermal energy for around 44 GWh per year. The company is also exploring biomethane for hydrogen production in its peroxide production facilities, but regulatory obstacles arise here. The main challenges in using renewable gases are high energy costs and the limitations of the RED III directive, which restricts the use of biogas for green hydrogen. Cross-border transport barriers for biomaterials also persist. According to Solvay, clearer policies and stronger collaboration between industry and institutions are needed to unlock the European market.
