Spain: third country in Europe in terms of biomethane production potential
Market and policy
In the PNIEC 2023 (Integrated National Plan for Energy and Climate), the Spanish Government doubles the biomethane production target to 20 TWh by 2030, a figure that is still well below what the EU requires (40 TWh). As Marta Peiró from Naturgy, a gas and electricity multi-utility company operating in the Iberian Peninsula, points out, the country has great potential, but it is necessary that the biomethane market is properly regulated and that all sectors are engaged. Naturgy, for its part, has already launched 60 projects to contribute to the achievement of the ambitious national goal.
