The biogas supply chain as a solution to reduce soil water stress
What is biogas?
Water stress, aggravated by climate change, causes increasingly intense and prolonged drought, compromising agriculture and soil, of which 60 to 70% located in Europe is already in critical conditions. Water circularity is a key element of the biogas supply chain. For example, urban and industrial wastewater is used to produce biogas, also contributing to water purification. In addition, digestate, used as an organic fertiliser, increases organic matter in the soil, improving its water retention capacity and resilience to heavy rainfall and drought. In this video, the European Biogas Association (EBA) illustrates a strategy to enhance biogas as an effective solution against water stress.
