The Irish biogas and biomethane sector in the European landscape
Market and policy
PJ McCarthy, Board Member of the European Biogas Association, provides an overview of biogas and biomethane production in Europe: current output is around 22–23 billion cubic meters, but the target for 2040 is 100 bcm. Ireland is just at the beginning of developing its sector, but aims to produce 1 TWh by 2025 thanks to 16 already funded projects. What is needed to accelerate growth? Less bureaucracy, faster permitting, and full valorisation of resources.
