US power grid under pressure: data centers, rising demand, and the role of CHP
In the United States, electricity demand is growing rapidly, driven mainly by the boom in data centers. PJM Interconnection, which operates the largest power grid in the country, is on the front line in witnessing and addressing this shift. It’s not only data centers weighing on the system, but also the electrification of transport and other end uses, at a time when many traditional power plants are retiring. This combination is putting pressure on the entire grid and will affect households, businesses, and industry alike. In this context, distributed energy solutions become crucial: combined heat and power (CHP), thanks to its efficiency and more favorable emissions profile, is seen by PJM as a strategic resource to support the grid.
