Anaerobic Digestion at the Heart of the Bioeconomy: How Biomethane Closes the Loop
Applications and technologies
Anaerobic digestion is the core of the circular economy based on biomethane. It transforms agricultural waste, slurry, and industrial residues into biogas, which is then upgraded to biomethane for use in transport and industry. The by-product of this process, digestate, becomes a natural fertiliser, reducing reliance on chemical alternatives. The CO₂ generated can be captured, reused, or stored. This entire system engages agriculture, industry, and local communities, delivering environmental, economic, and social benefits. As Graeme Lochhead, Managing Director of Nephin Renewable Gas, explains, it's a real example of resource regeneration with respect for the land.
