Biogas for the community: a 600 kWe plant opened in the Belgian city of Thuin
Case history
When a biogas project involves the entire community, there are countless benefits. This became clear at the opening event for a 600 kWe biogas plant in Thuin, Western Belgium. The plant, financed through a public-private partnership, was designed by Walvert, a local company that has been investing in renewable energy for over 10 years. It is powered by 12,000 tonnes of agricultural and livestock waste supplied by local farmers to produce electricity and heat. It feeds 5,000 MWh of electricity (equal to the consumption of 1500 families) directly into the grid, while the 5,000 MWh of thermal energy heats up the council-owned gym near the site. A virtuous cycle that benefits the entire city.
