Biogas is growing globally, but some open challenges remain
Market and policy
The biogas sector has enormous potential, but is hindered by several challenges. One of the main ones is the fragmentation of decision-making responsibilities, which are divided between various departments (energy, agriculture, food) and local governments, making it complex and slow to obtain permits and approvals. Other obstacles include high upfront costs to build plants and technical barriers in the supply chain. To overcome these challenges, the “Making Biogas Happen” programme proposes a comprehensive regulatory framework, appropriate incentives and a better link with global policies, thus fostering the growth of biogas as a solution for waste management, energy security and decarbonisation.
