Biomethane from wastewater treatment in France: current situation and potential to 2026
Applications and technologies
In France, there are over 40 wastewater treatment plants that produce biomethane from sewage sludge, for a capacity of more than 550 GWh/year. The first plant, a pioneer, was that located in Strasbourg, which has been producing energy since 2015, followed by Grenoble. It is expected that almost 70 wastewater treatment plants will produce biomethane by 2026, for a potential equal to the gas consumption of about 600,000 inhabitants or 4,000 buses – explains Laëtitia Aubeut-Chojnacki, Biomethane Development Officer at GRDF.
