Biomethane in Europe: the IEA’s perspective
Market and policy
In this interview, Dennis Hesseling from the IEA explains that Europe has enormous potential for biomethane: up to 55 billion cubic meters by 2030, almost 15% of its gas demand. It’s a promising scenario, yet still held back by financial, regulatory and coordination barriers that slow the sector’s growth. Hesseling points out that biomethane is currently more expensive than natural gas, and that stronger policies — from RED III to targeted incentives — are needed to close the gap. He also highlights the role biomethane could play in the future energy mix, where it can complement nuclear despite their very different profiles.
