Catalonia, biogas accelerates: strategies, investments, and new plants
Biogas in Catalonia is entering a phase of concrete expansion: 74 plants are already in operation, annual production has reached 600 GWh, and interest in biomethane is growing, with seven plants already injecting into the grid and many more on the way. The regional government is stepping on the accelerator with dedicated strategies, streamlined permitting procedures, and €80 million in new projects that valorise livestock waste and reduce environmental impact. Alongside these investments, awareness campaigns and studies on the real benefits of these technologies are underway. This transformation aims at 2030, with the goal of tripling production and making biogas a key ally in Catalonia’s energy transition.
We explore the topic in more detail with Laia Sarquella, Head of the Bioenergy Program at the Generalitat de Catalunya.
