H2-Boost: integration of technologies for hydrogen production, biogas, and CO2 capture using cyanobacteria
Research
The H2-Boost project is a UK government-funded initiative, lasting 18 months and concluded in December 2024. The project combines dark fermentation technologies to produce hydrogen, anaerobic digestion for biogas production, and finally, microbial CO2 capture using cyanobacteria. In the context of cyanobacteria, or photosynthetic microorganisms, we interviewed Jane Harrowell from CyanoCapture. Jane explained how cyanobacteria use carbon dioxide to grow, and when they reach peak density, they can be harvested to produce dried biomass, with a carbon composition of 40-50%. This results in a stable form of captured carbon that can be converted into biochar, graphite, and a variety of other high-value products.
