Ireland: state of the art and potential of the biogas and biomethane sector
Market and policy
In Ireland, to date, there are 30 biogas plants for the production of electricity and two plants for the production of biomethane. The current legislative landscape only encourages the production of renewable energy in general, without any incentives dedicated to biomethane. However, the sector is expected to be boosted thanks to the ambitious European targets, with a production of 5.7 TWh of biomethane by 2030, the equivalent of 200 new plants.
