Nephin Renewable Gas for the development of the biomethane sector in Ireland
Nephin Renewable Gas aims to become a key partner for the development of biomethane in Ireland. Supported by the Canadian Pension Plan Investment Board (CPP), the company aims to decarbonise natural gas through the use of locally produced biomethane. The strategy is based on a close collaboration with the agricultural sector, promoting a business model that favours both parties. Future regulation envisages that large energy consumers, such as data centres and technology companies, use a share of biomethane, starting at 2% of gas within the first few years and increasing this to 10% by 2030. To stimulate the sector, government support will be essential to facilitate the planning and issuance of environmental permits, in order to quickly build the plants needed to achieve the country’s energy targets.
