Spain: first “greenfield” plant for the production of biomethane from organic waste
Case history
In Spain, in the city of Ólvega, the first plant built specifically for the production of biomethane starting from organic waste for feeding into the grid is currently in the start-up phase. The project involves several partners that aim to dispose of local zootechnical and agro-industrial waste, which is transformed into biogas and, following an upgrading process, into biomethane fed into the local grid. The plant, when fully operational, allows to produce about 420 m3 of biomethane and to reduce CO2 emissions in the area. The digestate, produced as a result of anaerobic digestion, is instead used as an organic fertiliser on local farms.
