Biomethane for the Italian Hard-to-Abate sector: the role of the service provider in the direct consumer-producer relationship
Applications and technologies
Article 5, paragraph bis, of the Italian Agriculture Decree promotes the use of biomethane from agricultural biomass in production sectors that are difficult to decarbonise (the so-called hard-to-abate sectors). It refers to the possibility of consuming biomethane not only within the same production site but also at other sites, provided there is a purchase agreement with specific characteristics. In this way, hard-to-abate consumers can offset their ETS obligations (European Union Emissions Trading Scheme - EU ETS). Once purchase agreements are in place, a service provider is required to handle the transport and balancing of biomethane on the networks. Fabio Santorum, CEO of Openlogs, provides more insights on the topic.
