Brazil: Sugarcane Drives the Biomethane Boom
Applications and technologies
Brazil, one of the world's largest sugarcane producers, has enormous potential for biomethane production, estimated at 3.1 billion cubic metres per year. This renewable gas can replace fossil diesel in heavy-duty transport, helping to decarbonise the sector. A key resource is vinasse, an abundant by-product of sugarcane ethanol production. In fact, every litre of ethanol produced generates around 12 litres of vinasse, a residue that can be efficiently converted into biogas and biomethane. In addition to reducing fossil fuel consumption, producers can benefit from CBIO environmental credits introduced under Brazil's RenovaBio programme. Learn more in this interview.
