Energy transition in agri-food systems: challenges and opportunities for biogas systems according to the FAO
Agri-food systems consume 30% of global energy and contribute to a third of emissions, making a sustainable energy transition urgent. The Food and Agriculture Organisation of the United Nations (FAO) supports countries in integrating modernisation and efficiency solutions into their agri-food systems. The solutions available include the implementation of biogas plants, which reuse waste and residues, bringing benefits from an energy, environmental and circular economy point of view. However, issues such as lack of planning data, insufficient investments and poor technical capacity for management and maintenance, hinder the adoption of the technology. According to Connie Miller, Deputy Coordinator of the Secretariat of the Global Bioenergy Partnership at the FAO, strengthening investment and skills is key to ensure a sustainable transition.
