Olive pomace for biogas production: the story of Agroenergy
Case history
Olive pomace, composed of parts of pulp, skin and stones, is the by-product obtained during the olive oil mill extraction process. Pomace is a by-product that can be used for the production of biogas, particularly in countries like Italy, where about 3 million tons are produced per year. Its value can be demonstrated by the history of the Agresti family, in Andria, which has been producing superior quality extra virgin olive oil for more than three generations and has recently undertaken a project to make the most of its olive pomace through anaerobic digestion. How? By installing a biogas plant 100% fed with biphasic stoned olive pomace. With the biogas produced, the cogeneration module generates 500 kW of electrical energy and the same amount of thermal energy.
