Rice straw, from waste to resource for energy production
Applications and technologies
In Spain, the massive presence of rice straw in fields is a problem for many farms as, once wet, it is difficult to harvest it and if left on the soil it can become stagnant and ruin it. A solution to this problem is to use rice straw in the anaerobic digestion process for the production of electricity, as well as biomethane. This model can be replicated in many countries that have this resource available, such as India, which could use biomethane for road transport, or Colombia, one of the largest rice producers, which could use biogas to power cogeneration plants on farms.
