The French biomethane model
France is today Europe’s leading biomethane producer, with a capacity of around 1.5 billion cubic metres, thanks to a model built on three key pillars: production support mechanisms, the “Right to Inject”, which facilitates access to the gas grid, and the strong involvement of farmers in projects. The growth of the sector has also been supported by the certainty of being able to inject the biomethane produced into the grid, creating favourable conditions for investment. In this interview, Cécile Fredericq, Executive Director of France Gaz Renouvelables, explains the key factors behind France’s success and highlights the importance of maintaining a stable and predictable regulatory framework to continue attracting investment and developing new plants.
