                      European Biomethane Week 2025

                      Pubblicato il: 01 settembre 2026

The European Biomethane Week 2025 took place in Brussels from October 13 to 17, under the theme “Biogases: Leading Globally, Acting Locally – Fast-Tracking a Clean, Circular and Competitive Europe.” The flagship European Biogas Conference was held on October 14 and 15 at Autoworld, bringing together more than 1,000 participants from across the biogas value chain.

                      Wrap up

As Europe faces growing challenges around energy security, industrial competitiveness and decarbonisation, the 2025 edition highlighted the strategic role of biogases as a homegrown, renewable and versatile energy source. The discussions went beyond climate targets, focusing increasingly on the sector’s contribution to Europe’s energy independence, resilience and economic competitiveness.

A key message emerged throughout the week: biogases are not just about energy. They can help:

                      • strengthen Europe’s energy security and reduce dependence on imported fossil fuels,

                      • decarbonise hard-to-electrify sectors while making use of existing gas infrastructure,

                      • support a circular economy by transforming waste and residues into energy and valuable products,

                      • boost local economies and industrial competitiveness.

The opening ceremony featured Dan Jørgensen, European Commissioner for Energy and Housing, who highlighted biomethane’s role in providing clean energy while strengthening Europe’s security and industrial competitiveness. Julijus Grubliauskas from NATO further underlined the strategic dimension of homegrown energy, describing energy as both a target and an enabler of security.

The event also took place against a backdrop of continued sector growth. By early 2025, Europe had reached 7 bcm/year of installed biomethane production capacity, with around €28 billion in investment already committed to the sector. At the same time, speakers stressed that regulatory uncertainty and insufficient policy support risk slowing down this momentum, making clear and coordinated action increasingly important.

The European Biomethane Week 2025 confirmed that biogases are moving from being a niche renewable solution to becoming an increasingly strategic component of Europe’s energy system — provided that policy, investment and market conditions can keep pace with the sector’s potential.
