In developing and emerging countries, anaerobic digestion is becoming increasingly attractive from an economic perspective, driven by growing interest in the local production of renewable energy and fertilisers. Rising energy and fertiliser prices have further accelerated this interest, highlighting the role of biogas in strengthening energy and food security and creating new income opportunities. As Patrick Büker from GIZ explains, this approach fully supports the circular economy by creating a virtuous link between agriculture, waste management and energy, while promoting the recovery of nutrients and carbon.
