Cover crops: the (almost) still untapped potential
Anaerobic digestion
Cover crops are gaining attention in Europe as a sustainable feedstock for advanced biofuels. Despite their potential, the market is still underdeveloped and farmers show limited interest in growing them. According to Berien Elbersen from Wageningen Environmental Research, better communication is needed to highlight the “double benefits”: a new bio-based value chain and additional income for farmers. If properly managed, cover crops can also improve soil, climate, and biodiversity without requiring additional arable land.
