Biomethane, Italy: the synergy between agriculture and the circular economy
Associations
Founded in 1992 to promote the recycling of organic waste, CIC – Italian Composting Consortium – has led the transition from composting to anaerobic digestion and, ultimately, to biomethane production.
Today, it integrates agricultural residues, agri-food by-products and the organic fraction of municipal waste into a single value chain. In 2026, biomethane production in Italy reached around 350 million cubic metres, with the goal of achieving at least 1 billion. This growth is driven by investments and by the increasingly central role of this gas in the grid and in transport.
Massimo Centemero, General Director of CIC – Italian Composting Consortium, explains in this interview.
